Diagnostic Assessments

ADHD Assessment.

An ADHD assessment provides a comprehensive understanding of a person’s attention, focus, and self-regulation skills. The process explores whether difficulties are consistent with an ADHD diagnosis and identifies any other factors that may be contributing to attention or behavioural challenges.

Cognitive Assessment.

A cognitive assessment provides a detailed understanding of an individual’s thinking, learning, and problem-solving skills. It helps identify strengths and areas of difficulty, clarify whether challenges are due to a learning disorder, intellectual difference, or other factors, and guides tailored recommendations for support at home, school, or work.

Academic Assessment.

When learning concerns are present, an academic assessment may be completed to measure reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics skills. Comparing cognitive and academic performance helps determine whether learning difficulties are consistent with a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or written expression disorder.

Mental Health Assessment.

Mental Health Diagnostic Assessments allow us to assess for the presence of one or more underlying mental health conditions such as Depression or Anxiety. Understanding what is happening for you will allow us to provide the best recommendations for further assessment and intervention. Mental Health Diagnostic Assessments are not able to be claimed through Medicare.

Assessment Types.

Assessment and Report Process.

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Clinical Interview

A detailed clinical interview is completed with parents or caregivers (and the individual, where appropriate). This explores developmental, educational, social, and emotional history, as well as current functioning and concerns. Information from this interview helps to identify when symptoms began, how they impact daily life, and whether other conditions may be contributing. Previous reports or school feedback are reviewed to provide context.

Step 2: Application of Assessment Tools

Standardised assessment questionnaires are administered depending on the type of assessment being completed.

ADHD Assessment Tools:

  • Conners-4 – measures ADHD symptoms and related behaviours from multiple perspectives

  • Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second Edition (BRIEF-2) – assesses executive skills such as working memory, planning, and emotional control

  • Social, Emotional, and Behavioural Questionnaires – to screen for co-occurring concerns such as anxiety or mood difficulties

Cognitive Assessment Tools:

  • Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-IV) – for younger children aged 2½–7 years

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) – for children aged 6–16 years

  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) – for individuals aged 16+

Academic Assessment Tools:

  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III)

  • Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT-5)

Mental Health Assessment Tools:

  • Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II)

  • Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)

  • Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS)

  • Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21)

Step 3: Collection of Supporting Information

Where needed, additional consultation will occur with teachers, employers or other important individuals to gain a greater understanding of how symptoms present across different settings. Consultation often occurs via email or phone correspondence for ease.

Step 4: Report Writing and Feedback Session

All information and assessment findings are reviewed and integrated to determine whether the individual meets the diagnostic criteria for any condition/s according to the DSM-5. A comprehensive report is written summarising results, diagnostic conclusions, and practical strategies.

A feedback session is then held to discuss the findings, diagnosis (if applicable), and tailored recommendations for support at home, school, or work.
